Turkey’s Interior Ministry has fired nearly 9,000 police officers, bureaucrats and others and detained thousands of suspected plotters following the attempted coup, Turkey’s state-run news agency reported Monday. Warplanes patrolled Turkey’s skies overnight in a sign that authorities feared that the threat against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government was not yet over, despite official assurances that life has returned to normal.

A senior Turkish official on Thursday identified the Istanbul airport attackers as a Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz national hours after police carried out sweeping raids across the city looking for Islamic State suspects. Six Americans were among dozens of hostages freed from a luxury hotel in the Malian capital, Bamako, after gunmen attacked the building early Friday. The attack on the Belgian-owned Radisson-Blu Hotel left at least three dead according to Malian authorities, with conflicting reports on how many people were still trapped in the hotel and whether there were Americans among them.
