The North Florida Survival group trains children and adults alike to handle weapons and survive in the wild. The group passionately supports the right of U.S. citizens to bear arms and its website states that it aims to teach “patriots to survive in order to protect and defend our Constitution against all enemy threats.”

Armed with his camera, Reuters photographer Brian Blanco joined the group on a training mission led by Jim Foster on December 8, 2012.

Horse breeders have been coming to the open-air fair on the same day every year for the past three centuries, but the tradition has come under pressure from activists. In Indonesia, dozens of child jockeys — some as young as eight — competitively race at a track outside of Bima for prizes, which includes two cows at the group level and a grand prize of one million rupiah or $100. “This year, the races near Bima lasted for 11 days and attracted nearly 600 horses, many from the nearby islands of Sumba, Bali, Lombok and Flores,” wrote Beawiharta of Reuters.
