The 19th Annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge kicked off today as “super plungers” took to the waters at Sandy Point State Park at 10am. Super plungers hit the icy waters 24 times in a 24 hour period. The charity event benefits Maryland’s children and adults with intellectual disabilities and has become a winter time tradition.

The Super Plunge event Friday kicks off the Polar Bear Plunge weekend, and includes plunges for law enforcement and corporate participants, all of whom dash from the shore and into the water. Some entered and immediately retreated; others remained in for a somewhat extended dip. On Friday, 41 “Super Plungers” including Special Olympian Joe Wu, of Rockville, plunge into the ice cold Cheaspeake Bay water every hour for 24 hours.
