Even before smartphones proliferated, for one weekend every mid-July, the blocks of Mount Royal Avenue between North Avenue and Charles Street have become probably the most photographed in Baltimore. And even before Facebook’s “On This Day” feature made it plain to see, many of those photos looked eerily similar to those from the year before. Remembering Diane Arbus

Remembering Diane Arbus

American photographer, Diane Arbus, was born in New York City on March 14, 1923 to David Nemerov and Gertrude Russek Nemerov, a Jewish couple who owned Russek’s, a famous Fifth Avenue department store.

Arbus is most known for her photographs of social deviants or “freaks.” “There’s a quality of legend about freaks,” Arbus said. “Like a person in a fairy tale who stops you and demands that you answer a riddle. Most people go through life dreading they’ll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They’ve already passed their test in life. They’re aristocrats.”

The art of sports portraits

The art of sports portraits

34 Photos, 1 Video

Baltimore Sun Media Group photographer Jen Rynda has a reputation for her sports portraits, or “sportraits,” as she calls them. When local high school athletes are selected as either a player to watch for the upcoming season, or the editors’ choice for player of the year, Jen is sent to spend some time with that athlete to photograph them. She often tries to capture them in a way that is not only artistic, but also shows off their athletic prowess.

The set-up is elaborate, the process tedious, and Jen is meticulous. So, we thought it would be interesting to time-lapse her setting up and shooting athletes at the end of the spring 2014 season.

Click through the gallery to see some of her sportrait shoots over the past two years, and watch the video below to see how the magic happens.

A Maryland man argues that a quad photograph from the 1800s shows a crowd awaiting a hearse carrying President Abraham Lincoln’s body in front of Grace Episcopal Church in New York on April 24 or 25, 1865. The National Archives has had this photo, made using a four-lens camera on a large glass plate negative, for several decades, but it lacks detailed caption information identifying the scene.
