The Dakar Rally is an annual rally raid organized by the Amaury Sport Organization. Most events since the inception in 1978 were from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, the 2009 Dakar Rally was run in South America. It has been held in South America each year since 2009.

More than four hundred racers in four classes of vehicles raced 5,200 miles from Lima, Peru to Santiago, Chile in hopes of winning first place in the 2013 Dakar Rally off-road race. This is the fifth year that the event has taken place in South America after security threats forced the cancellation of the original race that had run from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal since 1978.
