As dawn broke over the Delmarva peninsula, a team a local wranglers – the Saltwater Cowboys – drove a herd of about 200 ponies from Assateague Island across the channel to Chincoteague.

Assateague Island National Seashore is home to about 101 wild ponies. The herd in the northern area of Assateague can be seen around the island, from parking lots to the beach to the salt marshes. On hot afternoons they often wander to the beach, where there’s always a warm breeze that acts, along with their fluffy tails, like a fly swatter.

Baltimore Sun photographers were on hand to witness and photograph the highs and lows of 2012, from the resurgent Orioles making the playoffs for the first time in 15 years to the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.
