The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday took up the emotionally charged issue of gay marriage, hearing arguments from both sides of the debate on California’s gay marriage ban Proposition 8. The court could make history if it decides to extend equal rights to same-sex couples. According to Reuters, the justices could rule by the end of June on whether the law may stand.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour began its final journey at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to its permanent home, in the early morning hours October 12, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. Over the next two days, the 170,000-pound (77,272 kg) shuttle will travel at no more than 2 mph (3.2 km per hour) along a 12-mile (19km) route from LAX to it’s final home at the California Science Center. NASA’s Space Shuttle Program ended in 2011 after 30 years and 135 missions.

Wildfires continue to rage in the west

Wild fires continue to blaze in a number of western states. In Northern California the Rush Fire near Ravendale and the Ponderosa fire near Red Bluff have caused thousands of evacuations. The massive fires threatened more than 3,000 homes. Firefighters also are battling the Chips fire near Greenville, California. California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in three Northern California counties after the fire advanced with 75-foot flames on a tiny community at the doorstep of a national park. The fire has forced evacuations and burned over 47,000 acres in Northern California. In Southern Idaho the U.S. Forest Service battles a number of fires such as the Springs Fire and the Trinity Ridge Fire in Boise National Forest near Featherville.
