Reuters Photographer Lucy Nicholson travelled to southern California to document the struggle faced by people whose water supply has run dry. In one of the towns hardest hit by California’s drought, the only way some residents can get water to flush the toilet is to drive to the fire station, hand-pump water into barrels and take it back home. The state’s three-year drought comes into sharp focus in Tulare County, the dairy and citrus heart of the state’s vast agricultural belt, where more than 500 wells have dried up.

Apple’s stores attracted long lines of shoppers for the debut of the latest iPhones, indicating robust pent-up demand for bigger-screen smartphones. The iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus became available starting in Australia, before rolling out in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, France, Germany, Puerto Rico, Canada and the United States. Consumers in New York and San Francisco had already formed queues to be first to buy the gadgets.

Every Wednesday afternoon, Doug Varrieur steps into his backyard in the Florida Keys, aims his .380 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol and fires shots that ricochet through city halls around the state. Varrieur, 57, discovered a little-noticed part of Florida law which prohibits local governments from restricting gun rights in any way, and in December he set up a personal gun range on his property in a residential subdivision.
