Although it’s just nine square blocks in the middle of Baltimore City, Abell is known in part for its vibrantly colored “Painted Lady” rowhouses (an extension of its former Charles Village connection) and historic architecture.
For about three decades, a ballpark in Abell was the center of baseball in Baltimore. Then, on July 4, 1944, the stands, offices, turf and the roof burned down.
Driving on I-95 just north of the Fort McHenry Tunnel, you cannot help but notice the grinning, mustachioed cartoon character that appears to be winking at you. Though National Bohemian hasn’t brewed its beer at the intersection of O’Donnell and Conkling for 35-plus years, the company’s iconic mascot remains a ubiquitous reminder of this city’s industrial past.

The Super Plunge event Friday kicks off the Polar Bear Plunge weekend, and includes plunges for law enforcement and corporate participants, all of whom dash from the shore and into the water.
