In this ever-changing world of new media in news media, I wanted to call attention to a video produced by Howard County Times reporter Luke Lavoie that was shot entirely on his iPhone. Luke also used a Rode smartLav microphone to get better sound during the interviews and shot his “b-roll,” or secondary footage, as a videographer would.
A special kind of fundraiser was held at Bill Bateman’s Bistro in Havre de Grace on Saturday, for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Participants had their heads shaved to support the foundation, which works to find cures for childhood cancers.

An anklet decorated with bells jingles as Priyanka Jayanti, a dancer with the Laurel-based Jayamangala School of Dance, stamps her bare feet. The jingling grows louder as Jayanti, 20, quickly leaps toward her fellow dancers, sweeping her arms into the air and extending her fingers toward the ceiling. Jayanti is rehearsing “Prayer to the Sun God,” one of the dances she and nine other Jayamangala dancers will perform Saturday at the Atlas Intersections Festival, an annual arts festival in Washington, D.C., with more than 100 performing groups.
The Desert Cafe, in Baltimore’s Mount Washington Village, has had some tough years with business, hit hard by the economy, competition and a lack of nearby parking. But owner Blake Wollman is also the proprietor of The Wild Pea Hummous, which has only managed to grow in that time. The photos here show the cafe – empty at lunch time on a recent Friday – and the bustling office space where Wollman and his team make and package all of their hummus varieties.
