Taking a sunset kayak tour of Piney Run Reservoir
You might say there are better things to do than to spend one’s Saturday evening working, but when working is taking a leisurely kayak tour around a reservoir on a warm day August, you might say it could be worse.
Joel Beckwith, the kayak instructor at Piney Run Park, and I happened to be in the same… boat… on Saturday, Aug. 16, when he led a tour of adults and I was there to document.
I spent three hours with the group in a kayak and attempted to capture both pictures and video of the evening. More on that below.
A remote desert where people go looking for work
Mauritania’s SNIM iron ore mining company aims to produce 13 million tonnes in 2014, around the same level as last year, the majority state-owned firm said. SNIM mines black iron ore in the northern town of Zouerate, a remote desert location in North Africa which nevertheless attracts people from all over the country looking for work.
SNIM employees proudly call their firm the lung of their nation’s economy and the train that ferries the ore to the coast stretches some two kilometres, making it one of the world’s longest.

The last oyster shuck
Drakes Bay Oyster Company in Inverness, California shut down after losing a long legal battle with the federal government.
The third-generation, family-owned oyster farm will be forced to shut its oyster shack and cannery on July 31 after losing a 19 month legal battle with the federal government. The Department of the Interior declined to renew the farm’s lease in efforts to restore the area, also known as Drakes Estero within the Point Reyes National Seashore, to a state of marine wilderness as designated by the U.S. Congress in 1976.
2014 Running of the Bulls in Pamplona
The annual Fiesta de San Fermin, made famous by the 1926 Ernest Hemingway novel ‘The Sun Also Rises,’ involves the running of the bulls through the historic heart of Pamplona, Spain. Four people were hospitalized on the first day of the daily race through the narrow, cobbled streets that form part of the northern city’s week-long festival.
Athens’ abandoned airport
For about six decades Hellenikon was Athens’ only airport, but it closed down in 2001 to make way for a newer, more modern airport before the city hosted the 2004 Olympic Games. After languishing for years as a wasteland of crumbling terminals, Hellenikon is set for resurrection as a glitzy coastal resort. Lamda Development, controlled by Greece’s powerful Latsis family and leading a consortium of Chinese and Abu-Dhabi based companies, has big dreams for the area since signing a 915 million euro deal for a 99-year lease in March.
Mount Everest and the aftermath of a deadly avalanche
In April, an avalanche killed 16 Nepali Sherpa guides who were fixing ropes and ferrying supplies for their foreign clients to climb the 29,035-foot peak. The accident – the deadliest in the history of Mount Everest – triggered a dispute between sherpa guides who wanted a climbing ban in honor of their colleagues and the Nepali government that refused to close the mountain. The sherpas staged a boycott, forcing hundreds of foreign climbers to call off their bids to climb Everest.
