Some are simpler, some are more elaborate and some — like Phil Hoesch’s display at his parents’ Cockeysville home — are coordinated to music played over a low-frequency radio signal. The Charm City Classic fencing competition

The Charm City Classic fencing competition

Seventy-one fencers took part in the division I-A men’s epee event in the Regional Open Circuit (ROC) Charm City Classic at UMBC. The ROC is a qualifier for the Fencing National Championships that draws over 200 for the various classes. Fencers can score by touching any part of the body with the epee, unlike the foil or sabre which have specific target areas.

The Maryland State House was closed to the public recently for an important occasion, the removal of one of the State’s most precious art pieces for a one-year restoration. The 1859 painting, “Washington Resigning His Commission,” by Edwin White, is “unquestionably one of the most important paintings ever commissioned by the state of Maryland,” said Alexander Lourie, Curator of the Maryland Commission on Artistic Property.

One of the things I still enjoy about my profession as a journalist is that we get to see and do things not everybody has the opportunity to do. On Wednesday night I watched and photographed the cleaning of a Fort McHenry tunnel tube by a machine called a “Unimog.” Any time a machine is involved in an assignment I’m all over it, and with this involving a couple of unique machines, it was right up my alley, or tube, in this case.
