Jamie Anderson completed a gold-medal sweep for American snowboarders in the slopestyle competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Anderson had been one of the event’s favorites heading into Sunday’s event, and she sealed the deal with a 95.25 score.

Meanwhile, at the rink, Russia won the gold medal in the team figure skating event, with the U.S. finishing in third. Also, Ireen Wust of the Netherlands won the gold in the 3,000-meter speedskating event. U.S. speedskater Jilleanne Rookard finished 10th.

One day before the first events of the Sochi Winter Olympics begin, LGBT rights activists and allies worldwide have been staging demonstrations against the Russian government’s controversial “gay propaganda” law. The protests focused on showing solidarity with Russia’s LGBT community, calling for Olympic sponsors to speak out against Russia’s laws and calling for the International Olympic Committee to better uphold its nondiscrimination principle.

Preliminary events in figure skating, snowboarding and skiing will be held Thursday, with the 2014 Olympics’ opening ceremonies on Friday.

The relay took the flame across the country through all 83 of its regions, including extreme locales such as Chukotka, the remote region in Russia’s Far East, the turbulent North Caucasus, and even Russia’s European exclave Kaliningrad.

Stray dogs being “disposed of” in Sochi ahead of 2014 Winter Olympics

A local pest control company has been ordered to exterminate thousands of stray dogs ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Alexei Sorokin, director general of pest control firm Basya Services told USA Today thousands of stray dogs are roaming the streets of Sochi, some of them “biting children” and causing interruptions.
