Sanctuaries around the country are preparing for an influx of retired private lab chimps now that the federal government has stopped backing experiments on humankind’s closest relatives.
Protesters converged on downtown Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday following the fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday. Protesters have rushed police in riot gear at a downtown Charlotte hotel and officers have fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. At least one person was injured in the confrontation. Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan, was arrested Monday in connection to weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey. He was charged with five counts of attempted murder of police officers in connection with a shootout in which he was wounded; federal prosecutors said they were still weighing charges over the bombings. Craig Sager, TNT’s NBA sideline reporter, has received a rare third bone marrow transplant as he continues his fight against cancer.
“OK, third time’s the charm,” the 65-year-old Sager said moments after the procedure began Wednesday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Hardened lava rock from Kilauea, an active volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island, is shown in Volcanoes National Park near Kalapana, Hawaii. The current lava flow erupted from a vent on the volcano in May and made its way to the sea in late July. Visitors can hike about 10 miles round trip to see the lava, or take a boat or helicopter tour to see the flow.

Every four years for a total of eight days, politicians, state delegates, political pundits, celebrities, photographers and protesters come together at the Republican and Democratic national conventions in separate US cities. This year, the RNC was held in Cleveland and the DNC in Philadelphia. Most of the action was inside the convention halls with police and protesters keeping things cool on the streets outside.
