Tens of thousands of runners, including some of the world’s best, crowded into Boston on a cold, lightly rainy Monday for the 119th running of the Boston Marathon.

Security was high near the start line in Hopkinton, along the 26.2 mile (42.16 km) course and around the finish line in Boston, in recognition of the bombing of the 2013 race, which killed three people and injured 264 in the one of the most visible attacks on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.

High-profile cases playing out in federal court are prosecuted on behalf of the American public, but the public has been largely barred from watching them. In Boston, reporters mobbed the trial of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev but can’t take photos or videos inside the courtroom. The same was true of the New York trial and conviction last month of Khaled Al-Fawwaz for conspiracy in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa. In both cases, the public had to rely on the drawings of courtroom artists. Some are calling on the courts to reconsider the camera ban. – AP

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Jordan Spieth had everything go his way Thursday in the Masters, so he should have known how the shot would turn out without even asking.

In the lead and in the trees, he slashed a 7-iron toward the green and started barking instructions at the golf ball until he saw it bound onto the 14th green. He never saw it smack into the pin and settle a few feet away. He only heard one of the loudest cheers of the afternoon.

“What happened?” Spieth said to his caddie.

Something special.

With six birdies in a seven-hole stretch, Spieth flirted with a major championship record he didn’t know existed and atoned for his lone mistake with one last birdie putt for an 8-under 64. It was the best opening round at Augusta National in 19 years, gave him a three-shot lead and stole plenty of buzz from the Grand Slam bid of Rory McIlroy and the return of Tiger Woods.
