As Confederate flag flies nearby, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney lies in South Carolina Capitol

A horse-drawn caisson carried Clementa Pinckney, the revered South Carolina state senator who was slain in his Charleston church, to the Capitol building Wednesday, passing the Confederate flag that has sparked national debate about such symbols.

Legislators stood under the marble columns of the stately neoclassical building, gazing down as hundreds of people escorted Pinckney’s mahogany casket to the rotunda.

Ann Shephard, 65, of Columbia stood in the 90-degree heat in black mourning clothes and holding a black parasol, sobbing as the casket passed the rebel flag. “A cloud has been over me since this happened,” the African American woman said. “I look at it from every angle and it doesn’t make sense to me.” – Tribune reporting

A scorching heat wave across southern Pakistan’s city of Karachi has killed more than 600 people, authorities said Tuesday, as morgues overflowed with the dead and overwhelmed hospitals struggled to aid those clinging to life.

Temperatures reaching 113 degrees Fahrenheit began scorching Pakistan’s port city of Karachi over the weekend. Hourslong power outages, typical in Pakistan, also struck the city, leaving fans and air conditioners inoperable as the majority of people in this Muslim country abstain from food or water during the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

For fans of historical re-enactments, 2015 has been Belgium’s vintage year.

Enthusiasts of a hobby called “Living History” have donned period costumes to act out iconic battles in Flanders for the World War I centenary, as well as major clashes between German and Allied Forces for the 70th anniversary of World War II. Now comes another big commemoration: The bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo, which spelled the downfall of Napoleon.

In Iran, female motocross racer jumps barriers

Iranian motocross rider Behnaz Shafiei’s passion for hurdling over dirt hills has led her to leap cultural and legal barriers in Iran, where women are banned from riding motorcycles in public.

“When two days pass and I do not ride my motorcycle, I get really ill. Even the thought of not having a motorcycle someday gives me an awful feeling,” Shafiei said on the outskirts of Iran’s capital, Tehran. “Sometimes, I think to myself, ‘How did people in the past live without a motorbike?’ Is life without a motorcycle possible?”

It almost became a reality for 26-year-old. In Iran it remains illegal for women to ride motorcycles in public. Conservative clerics also denounce the idea of women attending men’s sporting events.

A rising Red River was covering streets and, in some instances, entering homes in northwestern Louisiana, rising to more than five feet above its 30-foot flood stage in Shreveport.

Caddo Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said at least a dozen Caddo Parish homes had flooded last weekend — some with at least a foot of water — along the Red or its tributaries. There was flooding reported on major Shreveport area thoroughfares and scattered evacuations in some areas.

“There are other areas where, if you don’t have water in your home, it’s knocking at your door,” Chadwick said. — Associated Press reporting

Lost film taken at Amelia Earhart’s final flight photo shoot surfaces

2 Photos, 1 video

It was a clear spring day in 1937 when Amelia Earhart, ready to make history by flying around the world, brought her personal photographer to a small Southern California airport to document the journey’s beginning.

Al Bresnik took dozens of still photos, including a few that have likely been seen by millions. His brother John, who tagged along, made a very dark, grainy 3.5-minute home movie almost nobody saw — until now.

California’s shrinking Salton Sea

California’s shrinking Salton Sea

Once-bustling marinas on Salton City’s shallow water in California’s largest lake a few years ago are bone-dry. Carcasses of oxygen-starved tilapia lie on desolate shores. Flocks of eared grebes and shoreline birds bob up and down to feast on marine life.

An air of decline and strange beauty permeates the Salton Sea: The lake is shrinking — and on the verge of getting much smaller as more water goes to coastal cities.
