Vienna museum creates a buzz with nude men exhibit

Vienna museum creates a buzz with nude men exhibit

Days before its exhibition debut, the Leopold Museum in Vienna, Austria covered up controversial posters that showcased soccer players exposing their more intimate parts after receiving numerous complaints from the public. The visual advertisements — along with a 13-foot full-frontal photo sculpture of a reclining naked man called Mr. Big — were part of a provocative campaign to tease the launch of the museum’s “Nackte Manner” (Naked Men) exhibition.

“Previous exhibitions on the theme of nudity have mostly been limited to female nudes,” according to the Leopold Museum on its site. “Spanning two centuries, the presentation will show different artistic approaches to the subject, competing ideas of the ideal male model as well as changes in the concept of beauty, body image and values.”

The exhibition, which features some 300 works showing diverse and changing depictions of naked men from 1800 to the present day, runs until January 28, 2013.

Photographing Old Town, East Baltimore

19 photos

Baltimore-based photographer James Singewald has been documenting the city’s deterioration one block at a time. Most recently his graduate work at the Maryland Institute College of Art focused on the failed urban renewal project known as Old Town Mall. His current project “Baltimore: A History, Block by Block” takes a similar approach. Below, Singewald talks about how his projects coincide and the need to revitalize Baltimore’s communities. He also shares with The Darkroom, photos from “Old Town, East Baltimore.”

This is Part 1 in a two-part series about Old Town Mall. Click to read Part 2.

Double Exposure: 1966 World Series image still fresh in minds of old Orioles

One of the most iconic photos taken of the Orioles was snapped back in 1966 after the team had just swept the World Series in four straight games. It features pitcher Dave McNally, catcher Andy Etchebarren and an airborne third baseman Brooks Robinson.

“Brooks made the picture,” said Baltimore Sun photographer Paul Hutchins, who took the photo with a large-format, 21/4 -inch Praktisix camera, using a 600 mm lens. “When the last ball was hit to the outfield, I thought, ‘This is gonna be a big deal.’ So I watched the pitcher [McNally] and, as he came off the mound, I snapped his grin.”

Bill Clinton defends Obama’s record, rallies Democrats on Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton rallied Democrat supporters on Day 2 of the DNC convention, delivering an electrifying speech in defense of Barack Obama’s record on economy, healthcare and jobs, while criticizing Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s agenda.

“President Obama started with a much weaker economy than I did,” Clinton said. “Listen to me, now. No president — no president, not me, not any of my predecessors, no one could have fully repaired all the damage that he found in just four years.”

He even offered a laugh or two, “And by the way, after last night, I want a man who had the good sense to marry Michelle Obama.”

According to Twitter, Clinton saw the highest spike in tweets per minute towards the end of his speech at 22,087.

Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention continued on the fashionable suede heels of Michelle Obama’s energizing speech. Notable appearances included former employees at companies controlled by Mitt Romney’s Bain Capitol, President of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards, U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas and U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.
