Tall ships arrive in Baltimore as part of the Star-Spangled bicentennial. The ships’ arrival kick off events celebrating the bicentennial of the Battle of Baltimore — and of Francis Scott Key’s writing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” as he watched the British fail in their attack on Fort McHenry this week in 1814. Officials are expecting at least a million people to attend the events.

“Movie Memphis Belle” to fly Baltimore skies

The “Movie Memphis Belle,” a Boeing B-17 restored WWII bomber, is a living museum that flies around the country offering tours and flights to those interested in taking a trip through history. From August 30-31, the plane will be at Martin State Airport in Baltimore. In 1989, the bomber was hired for filming the English movie, “Memphis Belle,” released in 1990, hence the name, “Movie Memphis Belle.”

Pier 97 in New York was the setting for a free concert by Capital Cities and “Drop Your Pants and Dance for Underwareness.”The event was created to show support for people experiencing bladder leakage. According to Depend Underwear’s website “For each of our photos or videos shared, and every tweet or Instagram post tagged #Underwareness or #DropYourPants, Depend® will donate $1 to charity — up to $3 million over 3 years.” The charity will do research and education about bladder leakage.

Glasgow, Scotland is hosting the Commonwealth Games with sports ranging from badminton to wrestling. Rhythmic gymnastics which uses a hoop, ball, rope, and clubs as well as flexibility, artistry, and strength of the athlete is one of the sports competed at the Commonwealth Games. The Individual All-Around Final finished today with Canada’s Patricia Bezzoubenko winning the competition.

Day 5 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup began with Germany’s 4-0 win over Portugal. Iran and Nigeria then played to a 0-0 tie. Finally, the United States team defeated Ghana 2-1 during a Group G football match at the Dunas Arena in Natal. The U.S. plays Portugal next on Sunday, June 22

Romanian village covered by polluted lake

Romanian village covered by polluted lake

A Romanian village is covered by water tainted with cyanide and other chemicals. The polluted lake was created in the 1970s by chemicals resulting from copper extraction by a state-owned copper mine. Thousands of anti-gold mine protesters have used the lake as an example and the government has rejected a bill for Canada’s Gabriel Resources to set up Europe’s biggest open-cast gold mine.
