Officials: 3 hostage-takers dead after France standoffs

French police stormed a printing plant north of Paris on Friday, freeing a hostage and killing two brothers linked to al-Qaida who were suspected of slaying 12 people at a Paris newspaper two days ago.

A security official says the brothers came out firing, prompting the assault by police. The official was not authorized to speak about the sensitive operations and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Photojournalists Karl Merton Ferron and Lloyd Fox photographed the Ravens’ as they defeated the Steelers 30 to 17 at Heinz Field.

The Baltimore Museum of Art recently celebrated its 100th birthday. In addition the museum reopened its American art galleries after a two-year, $7.9 million restoration. The museum incorporated in November of 1914 and held its first exhibitions in a townhouse off Mount Vernon Square. The current museum was designed by John Russell Pope, who also designed the Jefferson Memorial and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Tributes to veterans took place around the world as countries paid tribute to the those who have served and those currently serving in the military. Veterans Day has its roots in World War I. November 11th was originally set aside as a day to commemorate the end of “The Great War” in 1918. The U.S. Congress, in 1954, voted to change the name to Veterans Day to pay tribute to all servicemen and women. In many countries November 11th is still know as Armistice Day.

Bald eagles are star attraction at Conowingo Dam

From November to February the Conowingo Dam attracts over a hundred species of birds, but the bald eagles are the star of the show. What draws them to the giant hydroelectric dam, which located on the Susquehanna River, is the way it makes energy. As the dam produces electricity, a large volume of water and fish are sucked through the generators stunning the fish into “floaters” as they exit the dam downstream. The easy prey becomes an excellent food source for bald eagles and other birds.

Last Saturday, Thoroughbred enthusiasts of all ages from the Three Diamond Club made their way to Sagamore Farm, a Thoroughbred training and breeding farm in Glyndon, Md. The morning was cold, but the fall colors decorating the farm and the early sunlight created something serene. With lovely light and warm jackets, the group set off.
