The third day of the five day horse racing meet of the Royal Ascot, held at Berkshire, is know as “Ladies’ Day” and is considered one of the highlights of the racing calendar. Horse racing has been held at the famous Berkshire course since 1711 and tradition is a hallmark of the meeting. Top hats and tails remain compulsory in parts of the course while a daily procession of horse-drawn carriages brings the Queen to the course.
In 1976, Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens founder John Armiger Sr. set aside 330 burial spaces for members of the Maryland public safety community who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Ten years later, his son John Armiger Jr. created Fallen Heroes day, an annual ceremony that formally honors them and their families. Over the years, 171 fallen heroes have been honored since that first ceremony in 1986. Of those, 100 have been law enforcement officers and 71 have been fire fighters. Ten are women.
The spring high school varsity sports season recently came to a close. The Darkroom turns back the clock to take a look at some of the best pictures taken by the Baltimore Sun Media Group during the term. “My library,” said Enoch Pratt, “shall be for all, rich and poor without distinction of race or color.” The Enoch Pratt Free Library central branch, at Cathedral and Franklin Streets, was built during the Great Depression and opened in 1933. Over the next few years, it will be completely renovated into a library for the 21st century. Except for one important item. On the library’s second floor, a fireproof steel vault, made by York Safe and Lock company of York PA, keeps many of the library’s treasures from its special collections safe and secure. The vault will be left as it is, although the items inside will be stored in a safe location during the renovations.
On a rainy and drizzling day the Baltimore Orioles launched their home campaign by taking on the Toronto Blue Jays. Though the weather was inhospitable the fans still came out to cheer on their team as expectations ran high following the great 2014 season where the O’s won the American League East pennant. Alas the weather wasn’t the only thing that didn’t cooperate as the home team lost, but hope springs eternal as there is a lot of baseball yet to be played.
Consumers around the world were able to try on the long awaited smartwatch on Friday and to place orders. On April 24, consumers will be able to buy it online or by appointment in select stores. The Apple Watch sport starts at $349 with the standard version retailing at $549 in the U.S. Luxury “Edition” watches with 18-karat gold alloys will be priced from $10,000 and will go as high as $17,000.

For the first time since 2000, the Department of Natural Resources endorsed extending the oyster harvesting season in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries for Maryland watermen. This was due to the harsh winter that froze those waters, causing watermen to miss a good portion of the season. Also, for the first time in six years, state regulators opened up Kent Narrows to shellfish harvesting. It is a rare case for watermen to gain a new area to tong for the prized oysters.
