Nepal in ruins, thousands dead after 7.8 magnitude earthquake
More than 3200 people have died after a powerful earthquake shook Nepal Saturday. The 7.8 temblor hit Kathmandu mid-day on Saturday, and was followed by multiple aftershocks that triggered avalanches on Mt. Everest that buried mountain climbers in their base camps. Many houses, buildings and temples in the capital were destroyed, leaving thousands dead or trapped under the debris as emergency rescue workers attempt to find survivors.

I lived 6-months in 1969, surveying the “Old-” and only- City of Kathmandu for the city government. Only now in October 2016 am I seeing the devastation of the city I love as perhaps my favorite city in the world. I’m in shock seeing piles of rubble where magical temples once gave shelter to the spirits and goddesses of Nepal. The shock of seeing so many rescue workers among the rubble, so many injured and dead — It’s heartbreaking. Thank you Baltimore Sun; I had no idea it was that bad. I’m so so sorry for the gentle-people of Nepal. So sorry. –jf 2016-10-03
