European spacecraft Rosetta became the first ever to rendezvous with the comet on Wednesday as part of a decade-long deep space mission that scientists hope will help unlock some of the secrets of the solar system. Rosetta, launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2004, will accompany comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on its trip around the sun and land a probe on it later this year in an unprecedented manoeuvre. The image resolution is 5.3 metres/pixel. (ESA/Reuters)

Religious Jews in Israel and around the world began traditional prayers and fasting today to commemorate the destruction of the First and Second holy temples in Jerusalem. - Israeli prison guards escort Yosef Ben David (C), one of three Israeli suspects in the murder of Palestinian teen Mohammed Abu Khudair, at Jerusalem District Court. Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday remanded Ben David in custody until the end of his trial, Israel’s court authority said. Israel arrested three Jewish suspects in the abduction and killing of 16-year-old Abu Khudair whose death touched off violent protests in Jerusalem and in Israeli Arab towns last month. Investigators believe Abu Khudair was killed because of “nationalist motives”. Palestinians suspect that far-right Jews carried out a vengeance killing after three Jewish teens who were abducted while hitchhiking in the occupied West Bank on June 12. Abu Khudair’s burnt body was discovered in a Jerusalem forest on July 2, a day after their burial. (Ammar Awad/Reuters)
- A child, cuddling a cat, rests under a shelter at the earthquake zone in Ludian county, Zhaotong, Yunnan province, August 5, 2014. An earthquake in China on the weekend triggered landslides that have blocked rivers and created rapidly growing bodies of water that could unleash more destruction on survivors of the disaster that killed 410 people, state media reported on Tuesday. Hamas may have hemorrhaged rockets and fighters, but its latest war with Israel has boosted its popularity in the Gaza Strip even if long-term gains look remote, analysts say. - One-and-a-half-year-old Palestinian boy Mohammed Wahdan (L), whom medics said was wounded in an Israeli air strike, lies in a bed as he receives treatment at a hospital in Gaza City August 6, 2014. Figures issued on Wednesday by UNICEF, the U.N. children’s agency, showed that 419 Palestinian children have been killed in the nearly month-long Gaza war. That compares with 350 children who died in Israel’s three-week ground offensive in the enclave five years ago. At least six Israeli children were reportedly injured due to rocket fire from Gaza in the past month, according to preliminary UNICEF figures. Since then, Gaza has been quiet as Palestinians and Israelis observe a 72-hour ceasefire which, it is hoped, will lead to a more durable truce after a war that has devastated much of the densely populated enclave.
