A woman dozes next to her spice stand at the San Juan food market in Mexico City May 14. An ancient megalopolis built in a drained lake rimmed by mountains, Mexico City consistently flies under the radar. Despite lacking the samba-steeped allure of Rio de Janeiro or the chic intellectualism of Buenos Aires, Mexico City also feels like a city on the up, benefiting from more than a decade of progressive city administrations who cleaned up the atmosphere, legalized gay marriage, introduced a successful bike-sharing scheme and spruced up the austere historic center. From high-end molecular gastronomy to endless street stalls selling insect-stuffed quesadillas, you’re never likely to go hungry in Mexico City. Picture taken May 14, 2014.

Beekeeper, or apiarist, David Hackenberg, 65, rests by the side of his truck at the end of the evening after transferring bee hives from a blueberry field near Columbia Falls, Maine June 22. Over recent years, bees have been dying at a rate the U.S. government says is economically unsustainable. Honey bees pollinate plants that produce about a quarter of the food consumed by Americans, including apples, watermelons and beans. A lawsuit has now been filed by environmental groups in the United States seeking an injunction restricting the approval of a controversial class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids, or ‘neonics’. These pesticides have become a subject of scrutiny in Europe and the United States as concern has mounted that they harm honeybees and other pollinators. Picture taken June 22, 2014.
