Haute hats turn heads at Preakness
Yes, the horses and black-eyed Susans are a big deal, but everybody knows Preakness is all about the hat. Check out these sightings at Preakness 2014.
- Carol Huff, 58, and husband Lawrence Huff, 74 – partners in a real estate tenant business in Philadelphia – got special permission to bring their toy poodles with them to the Preakness corporate village. Carol Huff dressed to match Tiffany, 15-months-old, while Lawrence Huff described the look on Karizma, 10-years-old, as “American princess.” (Sloane Brown/For the Baltimore Sun)

- Kuren Redmond, 35, Lauraville, host of “Out & About,” debuting on Charm City TV in June. “I got this from Marjae Hats, a local hat designer. I love pink. I tried on about 10 different colors and options. As soon as I tried this on, I knew it was it. I’m not a big hat person. But, I can definitely rock the fascinator,” she said. - This group of 7 women come together every year to Preakness. Everyone has to wear a hat, many of them lent by Beth Boots-Workman, who wore it to a previous Preakness. “We make it the ultimate girls’ day – the one day the husbands aren’t allowed to ask questions about,” said Boots-Workman. - Cynthia Witherspoon, 62, Columbia, S.C. physical therapist. “This was made by a little gal named Phyllis, who has a [hat] shop in Charleston on King Street. I was buying hats, and looked at this one and said, this is fabulous. Phyllis said, this is your Audrey Hepburn hat. I said, it is. It’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’,” she said.
