Shaun White declared the Sochi halfpipe nightmare over after opening his bid for a third straight Olympic title by storming into the final with the best score in qualifying on Tuesday. But that wasn’t enough to secure a medal, making this the first Winter Olympics since 1998 that an American does not win gold in men’s snowboard halfpipe.

In other events, Canadian teenager Dara Howell nailed her opening run as her rivals fell like ninepins on the Rosa Khutor snow to win the first Olympic gold medal in women’s freestyle skiing slopestyle at the Sochi Games on Tuesday. And with the final two runs in the women’s singles luge event set for Tuesday at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the United States’ Summer Britcher is in 15th place.
