Best Baltimore college football players from the 2013 season
In late August, this blog highlighted the seven best offensive and seven best defensive FBS Division I college football players from Baltimore. Now that the 2013 season is done, we take a look at the 10 best performers of the year, plus nine honorable mention selections.

HONORABLE MENTION: Horace Miller
College: UTEP
Position: Linebacker
Year: Senior
High school: Dunbar
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: Miller tied for fourth on the Miners’ roster with 53 tackles (16 solo). He also added one sack, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. UTEP finished the season 2-10.

HONORABLE MENTION: Cyrus Jones
College: Alabama
Position: Cornerback
Year: Sophomore
High school: Gilman
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: After switching from wide receiver to cornerback, Jones earned a starting job and recorded 25 tackles (18 solo), seven passes defended, five pass breakups, two interceptions, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

HONORABLE MENTION: Darius Jennings
College: Virginia
Position: Wide receiver
Year: Junior
High school: Gilman
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: Jennings was an occasional bright spot for the Cavaliers, who struggled through a 2-10 season. The former Greyhounds star was second in all-purpose yards for Virginia with 73.4 per game. He caught 38 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to returning 24 kicks for 522 yards.

College: Connecticut
Position: Defensive end
Year: Senior
High school: Reservoir
Hometown: Fulton
2013 recap: Willman appeared in all 12 games for the Huskies (3-9), contributing 36 tackles (16 solo), eight tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups, two passes defended, two quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

HONORABLE MENTION: Mike Horsey
College: UNLV
Position: Defensive back
Year: Junior
High school: Dunbar
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: A former walk-on who was awarded a scholarship in 2012, Horsey spent the first 10 games of his junior season as UNLV’s nickel back before being moved to free safety when the Rebels’ starter went down with an injury. Horsey finished the year with 43 tackles (30 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one interception.

HONORABLE MENTION: Dave Stinebaugh
College: Maryland
Position: Tight end
Year: Senior
High school: Perry Hall
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: Stinebaugh had by far his best season as a Terp, catching a career-high 15 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns, including a TD reception in the Military Bowl vs. Marshall.

Position: Fullback
Year: Senior
High school: Cardinal Gibbons
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: Small rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries (3.8 YPC). He powered an Arkansas rushing attack that averaged 5.3 yards per carry and 208.7 yards per game. The Razorbacks finished 3-9.

Hometown: Randallstown
2013 recap: Rooks earned All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades after helping the Wildcats to an 8-5 record and a 31-14 win over Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Kansas State rushed for 178 yards per game.

College: East Carolina

2013 recap: A second-team All-Conference USA selection, Johnson led the league with 8.0 sacks, posted a team-high 14 tackles for loss, and tied for the team lead in tackles with 80 (29 solo). Johnson, who helped the Pirates (10-3) to a 37-20 win over Ohio in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, also contributed nine quarterback hurries, four passes defended, three pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble.

Position: Linebacker

Hometown: Columbia
2013 recap: Despite missing two games (vs. Virginia and Wake Forest), Robinson finished fourth on the Terps (7-6) in tackles (73 total) and third in tackles for loss (10). Robinson, who moved to linebacker from safety, was also credited with four pass breakups, four passes defended, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and half a sack.

2013 recap: Amos appeared in all 12 games for the Nittany Lions (7-5), contributing 50 tackles (32 solo), six passes defended, five pass breakups, four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and one interception. He earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors.

2013 recap: Despite missing the last four games of his college career with a broken collarbone, Campanaro was selected to the All-ACC second-team offense after catching 67 passes for 803 yards and six touchdowns. He finished his Wake Forest career as the program’s career leader in receptions with 229, and third all time in receiving yards with 2,506.

College: Michigan
Position: Cornerback
Year: Sophomore
High school: Good Counsel
Hometown: Owings Mills
2013 recap: Countess led the Wolverines with six interceptions in 13 games, good for second in the Big Ten to Purdue’s Ricardo Allen (who had six in 12 contests). For his efforts, Countess was selected to the All-Big Ten first team by the media, and was a second-team choice by the coaches. He also contributed 46 tackles (26 solo), four pass breakups, two tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry for the Wolverines (7-6), who fell to Kansas State, 31-14, in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

Tied for No. 3: Kyle Fuller
College: Virginia Tech
Position: Cornerback
Year: Senior
High school: Mount St. Joseph
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: Despite missing three games with an abdominal injury (and playing through pain in a couple others), Fuller put up impressive statistics in earning first-team All-ACC honors by the coaches and being named a second-team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation. Fuller finished the year with 24 tackles (17 solo), 12 passes defended, 10 pass breakups, two interceptions, two tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry, one forced fumble and one blocked kick.

Tied for No. 3: Kendall Fuller
College: Virginia Tech
Position: Cornerback
Year: Freshman
High school: Good Counsel
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: The younger Fuller brother lived up to his five-star billing, intercepting a team-high six passes as a true freshman. Kendall Fuller was named the ACC’s Defensive Rookie of the Year and a second-team all-conference selection. He contributed 58 tackles (38 solo), 17 passes defended, 11 pass breakups, 2.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and half a sack.

No. 2: Charles Tapper
College: Oklahoma
Position: Defensive end
Year: Sophomore
High school: City
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: Tapper, who played parts of just two seasons of high school football at City, was selected to the All-Big 12 first-team defense – the only sophomore on the squad. The former Knights basketball star finished the regular season with 47 tackles (22 solo), nine tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Tapper helped the Sooners to an 11-2 record and a 45-31 win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

No. 1: Shaquil Barrett
College: Colorado State
Position: Linebacker
Year: Senior
High school: Boys Town (Neb.)
Hometown: Baltimore
2013 recap: The 2013 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, Barrett was tied for third nationally in sacks (12) and fourth in tackles for loss (20.5). He also recorded 80 tackles, six quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles, three blocked kicks, three passes defended, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one interception. Barrett was named MVP of the New Mexico Bowl after forcing a fumble late in the game, which led to a 48-45 win for Colorado State (8-6) over Washington State.
