Baltimore Biking Escapes
A photo essay for those who desire to hop on their bicycle and escape the crowded streets of downtown in exchange for something more adventurous.
- Located in the Reservoir Hill neighborhood is Druid Hill Park, easily accessible via North Avenue. It is the largest park in Baltimore and is home to an abundance of trees underneath, which cyclists can relax after their rides. The park is accessible from Druid Park Lake Drive, where the sidewalk leads into the pathway that surrounds the reservoir. This shot was taken in the northwest corner of the park, to the left of the intersection that branches off towards the zoo. (Scott Bradley/Baltimore Sun)

- Falls Road is a popular riding location in Baltimore, since its natural environment serves as an antithesis to the typical city street. The road begins at Maryland Avenue just north of Penn Station and continues past the Streetcar Museum. Upon reaching the top of the first hill, riders will see a bike-shaped bike rack on their left. Directly behind the rack is a dirt path that snakes down to the bank of the Jones Falls stream and a deck lined with benches. To the right of the deck is a concrete wall that can be traversed to reach a sandy beach along the stream. (Scott Bradley/Baltimore Sun)

- At the southern tip of Federal Hill is Fort McHenry, one of the most relaxing places in Baltimore. Coming from downtown, cyclists should take Light St. to East Fort Ave., and follow it all the way to the end. The outcome of the ride is a lovely panoramic view of the city skyline and the Chesapeake Bay. An asphalt path circles the park, allowing riders to slowly soak in the scenery. - Due south of M&T Bank Stadium is the Gwynns Falls Trail, which offers spectacular views of the Inner Harbor and peaceful solitude. Starting on Light Street there are signs demarcating the start of the trail head, which is best accessed by taking South Charles to West Ostend Street. After biking on Ostend for a few blocks, a left turn onto Warner Street leads you directly to the start of the trail. (Scott Bradley/Baltimore Sun)

If it wasn’t for the photographer needing to place the bike in and distracting viewers from the content of each photo it might have been an interesting essay.
