Instagrammer Feature with @DevilsDetails: Baltimore and beyond with a Boston Terrier
The Darkroom caught up with instagrammer Devon Doane, aka @devilsdetails, about her Boston Terrier Omar, Instagram do’s and don’ts and the craziest thing she’s seen on Instagram.
- #adrawingaday: A few artist friends, including @pietrash, @ryanbeck, and @jasonandrewturner, started a project where they did a drawing each day and instagrammed it. They were kind enough to let me play along for awhile. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Team Toilet Race: This was taken at Hampden Fest this year, before all the rain started. I tried to get most of the teams as they sped past, but this one came out the best. I’m still kicking myself for not getting the pink unicorn toilet chariot. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- #streetartistry: This was another weekend hashtag project. I didn’t have to go far for this shot. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Camden, Noah, and Omar: This picture has three of the cutest gentlemen I know; my friends’ son, my fiancee, and our dog. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Omar in the Spring: I love seeing all the pink trees during cherry blossom season, Omar loves to try and eat all the petals off the ground. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Springmas at the Pagoda: I loved the snowflake decorations next to the explosion of spring blooms. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Charm City Gondola: I snapped this picture on Boston Street, across from the Safeway. To be fair, I cropped this photo and the other 99.5% of the harbor looked lovely that day. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Comparing Regional Snowball Recipes: This was taken on Magazine Street in New Orleans, where marshmallow fluff is not standard.
- Farm Store Chicken and Crabs: Not my finest technical photo, but it makes me happy. This was the night before I was proposed to, when I kept missing all my fiancee’s cues. I see this picture and think about how he must have been in anguish looking at my hands all covered in crab guts with a ring in his pocket. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Flamingo Costume at Marquee Ball: I made a flamingo costume for the Creative Alliance’s fabulous “Alice in Wonderland” Marquee Ball this year. For the record, I had no idea that the unknown gentleman behind me was posing…suggestively. That may have been due to the giant feather bustle. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Fly Fly Away: Every weekend, @instagram announces a Weekend Hashtag Project, where they announce a theme with a hashtag. Users then tag any pictures they take over the weekend that match the concept. This one was #flyflyaway. This photo was nowhere near as good as most of the others, but I love the way it came out anyway. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Pirate Boat Season: I had two birthday parties in a row on the Pirate Boat and was pretty excited to see it back for the season on a morning run. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Needs a Nymph on a Rock: Sometimes, if you catch the light just right at dusk and over-process your photo just so, you get something that kind of looks a little bit like a Maxfield Parrish painting. If you squint. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Omar in the Grass: This was taken in the wetlands behind my parents house in Southern Delaware. We were working on “fetch.” (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Omar v. Flamingo: I happy to report that Mr. Flamingo lived. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Overnight Carnival: One early morning walk, Omar and I turned the corner and saw that the empty parking lot behind the church had turned into a little carnival. That should happen more often. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Pagoda Post Concert In The Park: After four and half years in Baltimore, I finally made it to the concerts in Patterson Park this summer. I know this is inexcusable, so I tried to take lots of pretty pictures to make up for it. This may be the only photo in my feed without a filter on it. (Credit: Devon Doane)
- Whiskey on White: My cat also makes a great model. When she wants to. (Credit: Devon Doane)

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am an attorney with a creative streak who, up until recently, spent a lot of my free time walking an extremely energetic little dog all over southeast Baltimore in a futile effort to wear him out… I took a lot of pictures in the process.
IN ONE SENTENCE DESCRIBE YOUR INSTAGRAM FEED:
I think my Instagram bio says it pretty well, “Baltimore and beyond with a Boston Terrier.”
TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT SETUP (PHONE TYPE, ANY LENSES USED, DSLR/ANALOG CAMERA TO PHONE, I.E.)
All of the photos on my Instagram feed thus far have been taken with my iPhone 4, or a few with an iPad. I shoot and edit most pictures with the Camera + app, then do a second edit with the Instagram filters.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO SHOOT:
Clearly, the dog does a lot of modeling for me. When he’s not in the mood to pose, I love taking pictures of good food, the Patterson Park Pagoda, street art, and other dogs.
IN FACT, OMAR HAS BECOME A BIT OF A CELEBRITY, NO? CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT #OMARTHEDOG?
Omar is a two and half year old Boston Terrier named after our favorite character on The Wire. He has a penchant for hooded sweatshirts (#dogsinhoodies) and carrying oversized sticks (#littledogbigstick) around the neighborhood.
I don’t know if he’s quite hit celebrity status yet, but he is pretty popular with the retired set in Canton and Japanese Instagram users. Our cat, Whiskey, on the other hand, is not an Omar fan.
CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE SEEN ON INSTAGRAM
Apart from the scantily clad folks, I’ve been most blown away by the costume culture posts and the #bostonterrier owners who can get their dogs to pose soaking wet in old fashioned tubs with suds on their heads. Omar reacts to baths like the Wicked Witch of the West.
INSTAGRAM DO:
My favorite Instagrams are the ones that keep the subject simple and well-lit. Most of my pictures end up being from the daytime because I hate the grainy quality my iPhone pictures have in low light.
INSTAGRAM DON’T:
Be creepy and/or mean in the comments.
NAME 5 NEED-TO-KNOW INSTAGRAMMERS THAT YOU FOLLOW:
1. @gaiastreetart: I love seeing the Baltimore street artist’s works in progress.
2. @jasonandrewturner: Jason is a Philadelphia-based artist who does amazing line drawings and other art. He also shoots a nice cat photo from time to time.
3. @evmb: Evan is a photographer who has the “simple and well-lit” aesthetic down. His pictures are beautiful.
4. @mariecadaver: I think I found @mariecadaver one day looking at #costumes. She makes taxidermy jewelry and puts together beautiful Gothic Lolita/Steam Punk/Edwardian costumes that I love.
5. @KOTARO2007: Apparently, when your passion for photographing your Boston Terrier can no longer be contained by a measly hashtag, you graduate to an entire account dedicated to your dog in funny outfits. Today, he dressed like a frog. I liked it.
*NOTE: Until recently, Doane had been living in Baltimore since 2008. She currently lives in Philadelphia.
