In the midst of a long hard winter, it’s nice to take a moment to reflect on one of the annual rites that give us hope the spring will soon be upon us. One such ritual is the beginning of Orioles spring training in Sarasota, Fla. Baltimore Sun photojournalist Karl Merton Ferron traveled south to capture images of the players as they stretch, run, throw and do drills as the team begins to take form.
A sinkhole collapsed part of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., swallowing 8 cars including a ’62 Black Corvette, a PPG Pace Car, a Ruby Red 40th anniversary Corvette and other anniversary vehicles. In November, a building had partially collapsed over a sinkhole at Summer Bay Resort near Disney World in Clermont, Florida. The 40 to 60 foot sinkhole opened up under the resort building reportedly beginning late August 11 into early August 12. To explore this geological phenomenon, we took a look at some of the more notable sinkholes to form worldwide, as well as a few that made headlines in Maryland in the last 10 years.

The North Florida Survival group trains children and adults alike to handle weapons and survive in the wild. The group passionately supports the right of U.S. citizens to bear arms and its website states that it aims to teach “patriots to survive in order to protect and defend our Constitution against all enemy threats.”

Stormy weather deflated the big bang that was expected at Day 1 of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. Much of what was planned for Monday was scale-backed to a shorter week of activities. However, despite the weather, politicians, GOP supporters, and protesters still turned out for the opening of the convention.
