With most high school fall sports playoffs nearing the finish, there are lots of emotions on the field – both from winners and losers – as they see their seasons come to a close. Baltimore Sun Media Group photographers saw action from many playoff games in Howard, Harford and Baltimore, Carroll and other counties last week, including soccer, field hockey, cross country, volleyball and football. The latest edition of the best of high school sports.
The Centennial boys cross country team pushed to the top of Howard County last fall, capturing county and regional titles. The team’s balance from top to bottom was a big reason for the breakthrough campaign.
Rising senior Hutson Baumann is among the Eagles runners returning this fall to try and successfully repeat.
Baumann turned in top 15 individual performances at both the county (10th in 17:55) and regional championship (15th in 17:47) meets, before finishing in the top 25 at the state meet.
His efforts earned him recognition on the all-county second team.

Football, field hockey, cross country and soccer fields are where they have spent many evenings and weekends — sometimes in the rain and cold — over the past three months.
