With most high school fall sports playoffs nearing the finish, there are lots of emotions on the field – both from winners and losers – as they see their seasons come to a close. Baltimore Sun Media Group photographers saw action from many playoff games in Howard, Harford and Baltimore, Carroll and other counties last week, including soccer, field hockey, cross country, volleyball and football. The latest edition of the best of high school sports.

Football, field hockey, cross country and soccer fields are where they have spent many evenings and weekends — sometimes in the rain and cold — over the past three months.

The 67th annual Howard County Fair began on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the county fairgrounds in West Friendship, and Patuxent Publishing photographer Brian Krista has been there every day. Patuxent Homestead photographers cover scores of high school sporting events during the school year. They capture hundreds of goals and runs, victories and losses, tears of joy and sadness. Turf Valley in Ellicott City hosted its fifth annual Preakness Celebration Balloon Festival from May 10-12. Patuxent photographer Sarah Pastrana got an early look Thursday morning, while Brian Krista came out at night to see the balloons light up the sky for the evening glow. Videographer Jon Sham took video from the morning event as well.
