An avalanche in Afghanistan wreaked havoc on the Abdullah Khil village of Panjshir province, northeast of Kabul. An Afghan provincial official said the death toll from the massive avalanche in a mountainous valley near the capital Kabul rose to almost 200 as bulldozers and other machinery began clearing roads and rescue teams were able to reach remote villages that have been cut off for almost a week. The official said as rescue workers dig through the snow, they are uncovering more bodies, including women and children.

Two years ago this weekend, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of Khaled El Masri, a German man who was held by police near his European vacation destination for having a name that was somewhat similar to one on a list.

He was then locked for months in a secret CIA prison without charges before being dumped on a roadside in a different part of Europe without explanation.

U.S. Army soldier Sgt. Matt Krumwiede was on patrol in Afghanistan in June of 2012 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion tore away both his legs, damaged his left arm, and ripped open his abdominal cavity.

Since then he has undergone dozens of surgeries and spent time recovering at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, learning to walk again with the use of prosthetic legs. In June 2014, he visited to his hometown of Pocatello, Idaho for the first time since he was injured.
