For 25 years, the World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been judging charisma-challenged chihuahuas and pugs with ugly mugs. At this year’s competition, held in Northern California, beagle/boxer/basset hound mix Walle was the, er, top dog, at a pageant of unsightly pooches.

With the sun shining for its longest amount all year, observances of the day often includes outdoor festivities at megalithic prehistoric monuments like Stonehenge. Meanwhile, across the equator, the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing its shortest day of the year, which comes with celebrations of its own.
Firefighters battled on Thursday to control a wildfire that Colorado officials say is the most destructive blaze in the state’s history. At least two people have been killed and at least 360 homes have been destroyed, with the fire continuing to burn.
