Michael Phelps qualified for finals in the 100 meter butterfly and the 200 meter freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday. He scratched the freestyle event but competed in and won the butterfly event. Last month Ryan Lochte won the 100 meter butterfly at the first meet Phelps competed in since he retired but he did not compete at this meet due to an injury.

Queen Elizabeth II’s speech honored the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins at a State Banquet at Windsor Castle. This is the first time an Irish president has been welcomed to Britain since the republic became independent. A former IRA commander, Martin Guinness, also attended the banquet. The Queen said during her speech that Britain and Ireland shall “no longer allow our past to ensnare our future”.

Soldiers from U.S. Army’s Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division return to Fort Campbell in Kentucky after a nine-month combat deployment in Afghanistan. The 60 soldiers were welcomed home during a ceremony at Campbell Army Airfield.
